The recently announced joint UC Berkeley and UCSF Bakar Computational Biomedicine Initiative (BCBI) is developing a new research institute that will bring together computer scientists, statisticians, and biomedical researchers to develop foundational methods for integrating and interpreting biological, pharmaceutical, and clinical data. 

The faculty co-directors of the institute are: 

  • Yun Song, Professor of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences and Statistics, and Director of the Center for Computational Biology at UC Berkeley 
  • James Fraser, Ernest L. Prien Professor and Chair, Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences at UCSF 

Biomedicine is undergoing a profound transformation driven by the convergence of the -omics revolution and rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. High-dimensional, multimodal datasets from genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, imaging, and electronic health records now capture biological systems at unprecedented resolution and scale. Advances in generative AI and high-throughput experimental platforms offer new ways to analyze these data and couple computation directly with experiment. 

The BCBI Postdoctoral Fellows Program will award competitive fellowships to exceptional candidates who will work at UC Berkeley and UCSF to advance discovery and promote interdisciplinary collaboration. Fellows will have dual mentorship, with a computational mentor at UC Berkeley’s College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) and an experimental mentor at UCSF or UC Berkeley. 

The BCBI Postdoctoral Fellows Program is designed to attract exceptional early-career scientists with a doctoral degree awarded approximately between January 1, 2025, and August 31, 2027. Candidates for the fellowship should have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in computer science, statistics, or mathematics, and an eagerness to work with biological scientists to enable new discoveries.
