Michael I. Jordan.

Michael I. Jordan will speak at UC Berkeley’s College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) undergraduate commencement ceremonies on May 22.

Jordan is the Pehong Chen Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) and the Department of Statistics at UC Berkeley. His research interests bridge the computational, statistical, cognitive, biological and social sciences.

Jordan is also a senior researcher at the National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology (Inria) in Paris. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a foreign member of the Royal Society, and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Among his accomplishments as a Berkeley faculty member, Jordan takes particular pride in his envisioning of a novel freshman-level course based on core concepts in computing and statistics, a vision that he and faculty colleagues developed into Data 8: Foundations of Data Science. This course has now been taken by tens of thousands of Berkeley students and adopted by universities worldwide. He also designed Data 102, another backbone course that supported the establishment of the Data Science major at Berkeley in 2018.

The commencement ceremonies for CDSS undergraduate students will take place on May 22 at the Hearst Greek Theatre in Berkeley. The first ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. Pacific Time, and the second ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Pacific Time. The ceremonies will honor students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science, Data Science, and Statistics in Fall 2025, Spring 2026, Summer 2026, or Fall 2026.
