Before UC Berkeley classes got underway last week, several events welcoming students to campus were held at the recently opened Barbara and Gerson Bakar Gateway.
At an open house on Aug. 25 – the day before fall classes started – the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) welcomed the UC Berkeley community and neighbors to the Gateway as they explored the building’s new classrooms, lecture halls and student study spaces. The Gateway building is now open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the Gateway Café has similar hours.
CDSS Student Services – located on level 1 of the Gateway – shared information on college programs and advising services. Staff answered questions from enthused undergraduate students interested to participate in programs such as Data Discovery and Industry Nexus and plan their academic courses and career paths.
For many incoming first-year, transfer and graduate students, orientation events on Aug. 24 provided an opportunity to explore the Gateway building for the first time after faculty and staff moved in over the summer.
Student orientation sessions at the Gateway were hosted by CDSS, the Department of Statistics, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, the Data Science Undergraduate Studies program, and several research labs. New students were introduced to their academic programs and each other at social gatherings and presentations ranging from technical resources to student organizations.
