UC Berkeley’s undergraduate data science program retained its No. 1 spot in the 2025 U.S. News and World Report rankings released late Monday.
The university also held its No. 2 ranking in computer science at the undergraduate level. It shared that spot with Carnegie Mellon University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Berkeley was also acknowledged in the rankings for its excellence in other undergraduate programs across campus.
“We’re thrilled to see this steady recognition of Berkeley’s excellence in data science and computer science, two fields that are changing our society and are of widespread interest to students,” said Jennifer Chayes, dean of Berkeley’s College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS). “We look forward to continuing to help shape the next generation of leaders to approach data ethically and masterfully.”
The data science major, run by the Data Science Undergraduate Studies program within the college, was established in 2018. Some Berkeley-developed data science courses have been shared and taught in other colleges and universities around the world as part of efforts to expand access to excellent and equitable data science education and to diversify the field.
CDSS and the College of Engineering share the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and house undergraduate computer science programs leading to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, respectively.
CDSS also houses the university's statistics major. U.S. News does not rank undergraduate statistics programs.
