Inaugural CDSS Commencement


The inaugural College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) Undergraduate Commencement Ceremonies on May 16, 2024 mark the first graduating class of the newly established college, joining the Computer Science, Data Science, and Statistics programs. Two ceremonies will be held to accommodate graduates and their guests:

  • 2:00 pm PT
  • 7:00 pm PT

Participate

Majors in Computer Science, Data Science, and Statistics who have (or will be) completing all coursework with an expected graduation term of Fall 2023, Spring 2024, Summer 2024, or Fall 2024 are invited to participate in this CDSS commencement ceremony.

For the 2:00 p.m. ceremony, the Greek Theatre will open at 1:00 p.m. for graduates, families, and guests.

For the 7:00 p.m. ceremony, the Greek Theatre will open at 6:00 p.m. for graduates, families, and guests.

  • Families and guests should enter through the North Gate/ Main Entrance.
  • Graduates should enter through the South Gate. 

Graduates and their guests should plan to arrive early. The entrances to the Greek Theatre require event security checkpoints, and there is the possibility of waiting in a line to enter.

Graduates

  • Plan to arrive early. We encourage you to allot extra time to travel to campus. The City of Berkeley has ongoing construction as part of the Southside Complete Streets Project.
  • Please bring your PRINTED MarchingOrder Grad Pass to the ceremony. 
  • Please arrive dressed in your cap and gown. Graduates will enter at the South Gate. Guests will enter at the North Gate/ Main Entrance.
  • Prepare for the weather and wear flat shoes.
  • The ceremony will last approximately two hours.
  • Graduates should plan on staying at the ceremony after they have crossed the stage. Guests should wait until the recessional is done before leaving their seats out of respect for all the graduates crossing the stage.

Tickets for attending family and friends 

All guests (regardless of age) must have a ticket to gain admittance to commencement. Graduates must be registered to attend but do not need a ticket. A link to purchase up to 6 tickets was emailed on April 25 to all graduates who have registered their participation. As of May 13, ticket sales have opened beyond the 6 allotted tickets per student. The link to purchase additional tickets was emailed to graduates on May 13.  

All commencement ticket sales are final. 

Tickets and ticket sales for the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society commencement ceremonies are separate from the May 11 campus-wide commencement.

Cap and gown

Caps and gowns are available for graduates to purchase in person at the Cal Student Store (2495 Bancroft Way) and in the Graduation Department at Fall Rush (2470 Bancroft Way). Graduating students can also purchase their cap and gown online via the Cal Student Store. 

Students and guests are encouraged to explore our online pop-up shop showcasing CDSS branded gear. Orders will be accepted through May 14.

Parking and shuttles

Public parking is available on a first come, first serve basis for commencement ceremonies taking place at the Greek Theatre. Graduating students and their guests may use the free Bear Transit campus shuttles to travel from the lot to the Greek Theatre.
