Rachel Ng

Rachel Ng is an Environmental Sciences and Data Science double major (UC Berkeley, Class of 2021). She became intrigued by data science after conducting research on conservation projects.

I’m extremely excited to see how data science can be used more within the environmental sector to support positive environmental changes.

Question: How did you get interested in data science?
Answer: I got interested after I realized that the environmental sector contains such a large volume of data that can be interpreted with data science. I’m currently using it in the modeling and visualization of energy data to optimize investment in sustainable energy.

Q: How is data science transforming the environmental sector?
AI’m extremely excited to see how data science can be used more within the environmental sector to support positive environmental changes. There is so much potential in data science to accomplish this—from creating more digestible visuals for complex climate data to predictive modeling.

Q: Any surprises in your data science work at Berkeley?
A: I was surprised by the accessibility of it in terms of the depth and breadth of knowledge that the community is willing to share to support each other.
