As part of continuing research, the EDGE in Tech Initiative would like to enlist students to analyze the participation of women and other under-included identities in Berkeley STEM majors and the Innovation and Entrepreneurship ecosystem. Students will conduct their own research and be given access to work with protected datasets from CalAnswers, UCOP, and OPA. At the end of the semester, they will have the opportunity to present their research to deans and faculty.
Students’ research will focus on identifying potential opportunities for effective interventions to retain diverse talent in STEM majors. This will involve defining clear, tractable research questions, conducting in-depth analyses, and creating compelling data visualizations.
Previous teams have explored the impact of socioeconomic status, gender, and ethnicity on educational outcomes in Computer Science and Data Science, as well as the consequence of minimum grade requirements for majors on diversity. Although students are highly encouraged to pursue their own research questions, some potential avenues for future research include analyzing the courses and majors that lead students to careers in innovation and entrepreneurship.
There will also be occasional guest speakers and professionals who use data science to measure and promote diversity and inclusion.
