The College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is dedicated to providing a harassment-free and inclusive experience for everyone in the Gateway — including faculty, staff, students, visitors, and event participants—regardless of gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disabilities, neurodiversity, physical appearance, body size, ethnicity, nationality, race, age, religion, or any other protected category.
We do not tolerate harassment of building occupants, visitors, or event participants in any form. CDSS takes violations of this policy seriously and will respond appropriately.
Expectations for All Occupants and Visitors
- Be respectful to each other. We want interactions within the Gateway to be welcoming for everyone. Everyone deserves to be here, and each of us has the right to work, study, and participate without fear of harassment, discrimination, or condescension.
- Speak up if you see or hear something. Harassment is not tolerated. You are encouraged to politely engage when you or others are disrespected. Sometimes the person making others uncomfortable may not be aware of the impact of their behavior. Politely bringing it to their attention is encouraged.
- Report concerns. If you are being harassed or feel uncomfortable, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact the CDSS Building Management Committee, event organizers, or CDSS leadership immediately.
What Counts as Harassment
Harassment includes, but is not limited to:
- Verbal language that reinforces social structures of domination related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, neurodiversity, appearance, ethnicity, nationality, race, age, religion, or other protected categories
- Sexual imagery in public spaces
- Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following
- Harassing photography or recording
- Sustained disruption of talks or events
- Offensive verbal language or gestures
- Inappropriate physical contact
- Unwelcome sexual attention
Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.
Scope of Policy
This policy extends to:
- Meetings, classes, workshops, talks, and forums in the Gateway
- CDSS-hosted events both on-site and online
- Social gatherings, hallway conversations, and use of shared spaces
- All attendees, staff, partners, sponsors, volunteers, and vendors
CDSS reserves the right to refuse admittance to, or remove any person from, any Gateway-hosted event or space at any time. This includes, but is not limited to, individuals behaving in a disorderly manner or failing to comply with this policy.
Enforcement
- CDSS staff and event organizers may take any action deemed appropriate, including warnings or removal from events or spaces.
- Our zero-tolerance policy means that all allegations of policy violations will be reviewed and responded to appropriately.
- While all concerns will be taken seriously, CDSS will use its discretion to determine how to follow up, and may refer individuals to other university resources for resolution.
Support
Event staff and building managers will assist participants in contacting security or local law enforcement, provide escorts, or otherwise help those experiencing discomfort or harassment to feel safe while in the Gateway.
Exhibitors, sponsors, and vendors must also comply with this policy. Sexualized images, activities, or materials are prohibited. Participants or partners who violate these expectations will be asked to stop immediately.
Why this policy matters
Harassment in academic and professional settings is unfortunately common. Establishing an official policy makes clear that harassment of anyone, for any reason, is unacceptable within the Gateway and CDSS community. This policy sets expectations for behavior, provides reassurance for all participants, and helps build a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.
Further resources and guidance are available through UC Berkeley’s Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination (OPHD).
The Gateway is designed to be an inclusive, welcoming and accessible space for all members of the public, students, faculty and campus visitors.

Only Service Dogs, Service Dogs in Training and authorized Emotional Support Animals are allowed in the Gateway Building.
A Service Dog (SD) is any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform a task for an individual with a disability, including physical, sensory (deaf or blind), psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. The work or tasks performed by the Service Animal must be directly related to the individual’s disability. This does not include: Animals that solely serve to deter crime; or Emotional Support Animals. Service Dogs do not need to be approved by campus authorities.
A Service Dog in Training is a dog handled by disabled people or professional trainers and may access the same spaces as Service Dogs. Both Service Dogs and Service Dogs in Training must be leashed and wearing a state issued identification tag.
Emotional Support Animals (ESA) - ESAs may provide necessary emotional support to an individual with a mental or psychiatric disability but are not considered a Service Animal under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). ESAs can also be identified as a companion animal, therapy animal, assistance animal, or support animal. ESAs are allowed on campus as an accommodation for a person with a disability. They must be approved by campus to live in campus housing or enter campus buildings, including work and academic areas. See Dogs and Animals on Campus Property to find out how to get your ESA approved for going on campus and/or going into the Gateway.
