Data Science Peer Advisors (DSPAs) serve as the first point of contact for students who are interested in the major, minor, or data science in general. The peer advisors will provide advice, support, and mentorship on a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:
- Schedule planning and course recommendations
- Knowledge and experience of major courses
- Student involvement and extracurriculars
- Undergraduate research opportunities
Position Details for 2025-2026
- NOTE: This position is paid ($18.67 an hour)
- Minimum of 5 hours weekly commitment, which consists of 4 hours of drop-in advising sessions and a weekly 1-hour meeting.
- Occasional tabling for DSUS/CDSS events (i.e. Cal Day, New Student Recruitment)
Qualifications
Required
- Must be available for on-campus training (2025 dates: 8/25 & 8/26)
- Must be available to work in person in Warren Hall (DSPAs are available to peers M-Th: 10 am-4pm)
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, discretion, and objectivity in all matters
- Willingness to help peers with Data Science related questions
- Ability to understand and adapt to the complexities of an evolving academic program
- Ability to relate effectively with groups and individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Preferred
- Successful completion of all, or most, of the lower-division Data Science major requirements or Data Science minor requirements
- Completed at least two upper-division courses toward the Data Science major requirements
- Preference will be given to transfer students, study abroad experience, academic difficulty experience, experience with advising/mentoring peers and or students with less popular domain emphasis plans.
