Our Current Educational Partnerships

UC Berkeley Data Science Undergraduate Studies collaborates with partner institutions to actively expand equitable, accessible, quality data science education. We strive to position California as a leader in the field through several initiatives.

Pathways: Building Inclusive Foundations in Data Science

Through the Pathways project, funded by CA Learning Lab, UC Berkeley's Data Science Undergraduate Studies collaborates with California universities and community colleges to enhance foundational data science education statewide. This initiative facilitates seamless transitions for students from 2-year to 4-year California higher education institutions, empowering them to excel in the field of data science.

CA Learning Lab Cohort Collaboration Grant

The California Education Learning Lab (Learning Lab) awarded over $8 million across 13 grants in response to Learning Lab’s funding opportunity Grand Challenge: Building Critical Mass for Data Science. This grant opportunity incentivizes public higher education institutions to embrace data science as an opportunity to build new pathways, modernize majors, attract historically underrepresented students into STEM, and deepen both civic and interdisciplinary learning.

UC Berkeley Data Science Undergraduate Studies serves the critical role in promoting collaboration across awarded projects.

UC Berkeley experts received a $1.5 million grant from the California Education Learning Lab (Learning Lab) to launch a first-of-its-kind computing technology hub for the state’s public colleges and universities.

The hub will provide access to students across the state to course materials built on the JupyterHub platform, a cloud-based, open-source system widely used in scientific and industrial workplaces. It will be staffed and run by Berkeley for several California higher education institutions, saving money, aligning curricula and facilitating transfer pathways for STEM students.

Other Initiatives Supporting Data Science Pathways

At a table, high school BUDS students sit with laptops as William Reed leads a group discussion.

Berkeley Unboxing Data Science (BUDS)

Berkeley Data Science Undergraduate Studies partners with the Achieve program to offer Berkeley Unboxing Data Science (BUDS), an initiative advancing opportunities in STEM for underrepresented high school students. BUDS provides a hands-on boot camp in data analysis and coding, taught by UC Berkeley Data Science students. The program also showcases real-world applications of the subject, offering a glimpse into potential futures in the field to inspire the next generation of data scientists and programmers.

Puente

Through our partnership with Puente Math and Science (MaS), we offer presentations and tabling to educate and inspire California's educationally underrepresented community college students about data science. Our goal is to combat the impression among many of these students that a STEM major is out of reach and instead illuminate possibilities and pathways into tech through a 4-year degree.
