Ari Edmundson, PhD (he/him/his)
Supervisor
Ari Edmundson received his PhD in History from UC Berkeley in May, 2019. Ari's research has focused on the intellectual history of European philosophy, social, political and legal theory, cybernetics, systems theory, and critical theory. Since January 2018, Ari has helped teach and develop pedagogy for the Human Contexts and Ethics of Data course at Berkeley. He is currently a Lecturer in the Data Science Undergraduate Studies Program in the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society at UC Berkeley.

Team Lead
Anna is a senior studying Data Science and Legal Studies and is interested in the intersection of data, law, and society with the goal of promoting equity and justice. She believes that data science has the ability to help others and create positive changes in our world, however data also requires constant ethical, contextual and legal analysis. Outside of academics, she enjoys reading, art, and exploring obscure places.

Sammy is a senior from Los Angeles majoring in Political Science and minoring in Data Science. She is passionate about racial justice, gender equity, and LGBTQ+ rights, and is particularly interested in the intersections between these social issues and technology. In her free time, Sammy enjoys music and food. She loves being a part of the HCE team!

Yuning is a junior majoring in Political Science and Data Science. He is interested in using innovative tools to address public policy issues, especially education inequity. He is also interested in reading history and doing research in political science. In his free time, Yuning enjoys playing soccer and watching other people play video games.

Dea is a senior from Albania studying Data Science. She loves reading, writing blogs, coffee and exploring the Bay with her bike. She is interested in all challenges in data ethics, especially in issues of AI-human alignment, smart cities and using tech to understand climate change and sustainability.

Pujitha is a freshman at UC Berkeley hoping to major in data science and sociology. Understanding how structural problems manifest themselves on both a societal and individual level, as well as activism in general, are a large part of who she is and what she hopes to do with her education. She is particularly passionate about issues relating to the patriarchy, capitalism, and racism and the double consciousness that comes with understanding our system's issues but simultaneously having to thrive in it regardless. She hopes to use data science as a tool to further explore such social problems. Some other things she loves are fashion, film, photography, music, karaoke/dancing, the wilderness, and meeting new people!

Yash is a sophomore majoring in Applied Math and Computer Science, with a minor in Public Policy. He is interested in studying how technology in all its forms interacts with policy-making, education and innovation. Outside of this, he loves to hike, play badminton and eat copious amounts of ice-cream.

Lydia is a second year studying Political Science and Data Science. She is interested in the crossovers between the techniques data science offers, the law, and social justice issues. She also enjoys delving into the ethical implications that come with the use of data and technological development in broader society. In her free time, Lydia loves reading, baking, and traveling.

Vedansh is a junior studying Computer Science, Cognitive Science, and Data Science. He’s involved in teaching in EECS, and has curiously studied the ways through which inequitable access to educational resources early on impacts CS students at the college level. He’s passionate about CS Education research, and is currently working with Dr. Dan Garcia on an “As for All” policy that aims to enable every student, regardless of prior experience, to receive an A (given sufficient time and interest). In his free time, Vedansh likes to take long walks and explore new dinner spots in Berkeley!

Anu is a senior majoring in Data Science & Conservation and Resource Studies. They are interested in exploring the intersections of technology, nature, health, education and social justice – with particular academic passions in information infrastructures, data governance, and human/community rights. In their free time, Anu likes to listen to comedy podcasts, watch unnecessary amounts of reality tv, and try new cuisines!

Aryana is a 4th year Cognitive Science and Data Science student. She is intrigued by the applications of Data Science in Neuroscience and Genetics, especially because of its human-centered context. She strives to embody HCE's ethos in her academic, professional, and personal life. She loves all forms of art, and she is currently getting into body surfing and knitting.

Outside of academics, she likes admiring nature, spending time with her family, and exploring new food spots with friends.
